Cat Mate Fitting Instructions

Before installing your cat flap please read the fitting instructions supplied with your cat flap carefully.

(A) FOR WOODEN DOORS, PANELS AND SCREENS 1 Place the template in desired position on door and draw round completely, (Fig. 1). We recommend that the bottom of the hole is approximately the same level as your pet’s stomach.

2. Cut out hole. This may be done by drilling a hole and then using an electric jig-saw to cut along the inside of the drawn line as in Fig. 2. Be careful to cut hole square to the door, particularly with thicker doors. For screen doors use scissors or a knife to cut the hole.

3. If necessary, cut interior frame with a sharp knife to correct length to suit your door panel. Take care to keep hands clear of the blade, and support inside of moulding with a suitable piece of wood as shown in Fig. 3.  For panels from 0 to 5/8” (16mm) thick cut to line (A).

4. Position interior frame on inside of door and mark 4 screw positions. For panels less than 7/8” (23mm) thick: remove interior frame and drill screw clearance holes in panel to approx. 3/16” (5mm) diameter. Then, using the appropriate screws and working from the inside of the house, tighten the interior frame to the exterior frame as in Fig. 4. Use the screws as follows:
Panel Thickness
0-1/8” (0-4mm)
1/8-3/8” (4-10mm)
3/8-5/8” (10-16mm)
5/8-7/8”(16-23mm)
Screw length
1/2”(13mm)
3/4”(19mm)
1”(25mm) (not supplied)
11/4”(33mm)

For panels thicker than 7/8” (23mm) do not drill screw clearance holes: Instead first screw interior frame to inside of panel with short (1/2” / 13mm) screws. Next drill out the 4 screw holes in the exterior frame to allow close clearance on screw. (Recommended drill 5/32” (4mm) diameter). Finally fix exterior frame to exterior of door using 3/4” (19mm) screws. When happy with installation cover screw heads with caps supplied.

WALLS

After making a hole in your wall, line with 3/4” (19mm) plywood or similar material as shown in Fig. 5. This gives a neat tunnel to the installation and readily accepts the fixing screws. After construction of tunnel, proceed to step 4 above. To train your pet to use the cat flap, prop it open at first and use food as an encouragement.

Frequently Asked Pet Door Questions:

Q.

A.

Are Pet Mate Pet Doors easy for pets to use, will the animal soon get used to it?

Most animals will take to it immediately; a few more timid creatures will need a little encouragement with tasty titbits. As soon as the pet realises the freedom and independence benefits that the flap has to offer, there will be no more problems!

Q.

What types of door or wall can I fit a pet door into?

There are Pet Mate pet doors available to fit almost any material including glass.

Q.

A.

Are Pet Mate Pet Doors easy to fit?

We offer simple instructions with diagrams and supply a cut-out template to make installation relatively easy. The helpline is always available if more advice is needed.

Q.

A.

What are 2-way locking and 4-way locking pet doors?

A 2-way lock allows the user to set the flap in two different positions – either “Locked” or “Unlocked”. A 4-way lock gives more control of your pets' movements as it also allows the user to set the flap to “In Only” and “Out Only” – which are very useful if you want to keep your pet outside or lock him in at night.

Are spare parts, particularly flaps readily available?

Yes, we offer a lifetime parts service. Please call our helpline on (01932) 700 001, click on the “contact us” button to e-mail us, or go to the customer service part of our web site for advice.

Q.

A.

Does the magnet feel heavy to the cat?

No, the magnet is designed specifically for cats of all temperaments, breeds, and sizes and is smaller than many of our competitors’ magnets.

Q.

A.

Does the Pet Mate Electromagnetic Door keep out all other pets?

The Electromagnetic Cat Flap keeps out stray cats, which by definition would not be wearing a collar or magnet. Any magnetic cat flap has the potential to admit a pet wearing a magnet.

Q.

A.

Will my Pet Mate Electromagnetic Door work if my dog wears a cat collar magnet?

Most small dogs have a longer nose than cats. For this reason, the dog collar magnet is more powerful than the cat collar magnet although different breeds will obviously have different nose to collar distances.

For best results, we recommend that all dogs use dog collar magnets, and cats use cat collar magnets.
